Ridiculously overpriced handbags

Maria Palma from the Runway Scoop brings a story about luxury handbags, pointing to the Forbes article named Most Expensive Handbags. In it the author Lauren Sherman states: Yes, five-figure handbags. To be sure, they're rare–but for a certain set, they have come to replace the $675 Manolo Blahniks of the post- Sex and the City '90s.

Fashionlines' Margaret Pluvinage writes about her Hermes Birkin handbag: I immediately took to the gray streets of NYC with my orange Birkin. I found out the way to get immediate service in the Madison Avenue shops is to tote the ultimate status symbol. At the Hermes store I was treated as a major stockholder in a public company, I was part of a very special elite club.

Well, for $20 000+ I'd expect the admittance too.

Although many women would actually kill to get their hands on one of those bags, one must wonder if this really isn't just a wee bit too shallow. After all, it's a bag for God's sake!

I must admit I have never owned a piece of wardrobe nearly this expensive, but would probably freak out if anybody else would come within 20 feet of it. I would live in constant fear of scratching, loosing or otherwise destroying a car-worth bag.

By the way, I'm totally showing the Forbes article to my darling significant other. I think this will shut him up the next time I get my new handbag.
